Supporting the New Fernandina Beach Boys & Girls Club is an opportunity for you to make a lasting gift to the youth of our community. The existing Fernandina Beach Boys & Girls Club has been operational since Fall 2007.
Housed in a small ranch-style structure at Indigo and 11th Streets, the facility comfortably holds about 35 kids, but average daily attendance in 2011 exceeds 50.
The Foundation board believes more youth could be served and attendance would grow rapidly with expanded facilities. So, a new Fernandina Beach Club (FB) will be built on Lime Street, behind Southside Elementary School.
Walter Cromartie is the Unit Director of the FB Club. Walter has been with us for nearly three years and has done an outstanding job. He has a stable staff of three, all of whom have done a very good job. Our member-to staff ratio standard is 18:1.
The core curriculum areas at the FB Club are:
• Character and Leadership Development
• Education and Career Development
• Health and Life Skills
• The Arts
• Sports, Fitness and Recreation
New Fernandina Beach Club
The new Roberts Learning & Achievement Center will front to Lime Street behind Southside Elementary School and between 11th and 13th Streets. The new Club will attract kids from the Housing Authority and from at least a 1 mile radius.
The new Club will consist of a Clubhouse that will serve 240 kids, an Athletic Annex that that will be a full-court basketball and volleyball surface with a steel A-frame roof to protect from rain and sun, a Playground Area and Horticulture Area.
Additionally, the SchoolBoard will work with us to allow use of the field adjacent to the Athletic Annex for soccerand flag football. The new FB Club will use the Athletic Annex after 2:00 PM on normalschool days. The new FB Club will use the Athletic Annex all day on school holidays, weekends and during summer (we operate an all day summer program when school isrecessed for summer vacation).
The “Roberts Learning & Achievement Center” Construction
The Foundation board has decided to move forward with the construction even though the Capital Campaign is not complete. There is an estimated 10-15% savings in constructioncosts by building now as opposed to later if building demand escalates back to the pre-2009 timeframe.
Miranda Architects is developing plans and specifications and will conduct the constructionbidding process. Construction should be ready to begin in the Summer of 2011. We anticipate approximately one year for construction with a possible opening for the 2012 Summer program.
The estimated cost for construction, furniture, parking, landscaping, signage and all other costs is $1,800,000. As of December, 2011, we have received $1,719,000 in cash and pledges.
Gifts can be made via cash, check, credit card, securities transfer, or pledges for up to three years. Commemorative Naming Opportunities are available with pledges as well.
